Blairsville Cuts Millage Increase in Half

BLAIRSVILLE--Borough property owners won't face as large a tax increase as originally advertised next year. Council voted 4-0 Tuesday to scale back a 2008 real estate tax hike from 4 mills to 2 mills, trimming the borough police budget from $360,350 this year to $335,804 next year to make up for the difference in revenue.

Council President Ron Evanko said the change means the borough won't hire an additional full-time police officer. It will maintain the current complement of three full-timers and Police Chief Donald Hess--who was physically incapacitated in a freak incident Monday but remains in command of the department (see story on page A3).
