- An up-tempo practice Wednesday that lasted more than 90 minutes, which included an emphasis on north-south puck movement, provided evidence that interim head coach Dan Bylsma has an approach that differed from his predecessor, Michel Therrien. However, Bylsma suggested that he may borrow from Therrien's in-game book by occasionally pairing superstar centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the same line. "There are times when I think together it will be beneficial, but I don't think that's going to happen all the time," Bylsma said. "I watched Michel do that, and I learned from how he did that at different times. I think he did a good job with that."

- Center Max Talbot on Bylsma's first full practice: "I think, for the team, maybe ... we needed a change. The guys came off today and were really upbeat and passionate, and they really had fun on the ice. We learned a lot. Now we've got to look ahead and win some hockey games."
