A priest from Erie County has been named the new leader of the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic diocese.

Catholic leaders announced Friday that Pope Benedict XVI appointed Monsignor Mark Bartchak as bishop of the Westcentral Pennsylvania diocese. Bartchak is judicial vicar of the Diocese of Erie and has been an assistant or adviser to Erie Bishop Donald Trautman for nearly two decades.
