It remains unclear what caused a large cloud of chemical gas to be released at the Leetsdale Industrial Park Thursday morning, leaving one man with minor injuries and 500 workers evacuated for several hours.

About 8:30 a.m., a worker at Weatherford International's Engineered Chemistry division was transferring ammonium persulfate - - a dry, crystalline chemical used in the oil and gas industry to thin out liquids -- from 5-gallon pails into a large mixer when a violent reaction started in one or more of the pails, said Allegheny County Chief of Emergency Services Robert Full.
