CAIRO -- Five days into January's uprising against President Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian interior ministry forces cordoned off parts of the capital's teeming slum of Imbaba and entered its narrow streets.

"There were snipers on the tops of the buildings," said Galal Faisel Ali, 32. "My brother Nasr was looking out the door to see if people were gathering to protest."
