With unscheduled absenteeism costing some large firms $760,000 a year on average, businesses have turned to telecommuting, alternative work arrangements and wellness programs as ways to keep workers on the job, a survey found.

One company that has taken rewarding employees for good attendance to a higher level is medical supply distributor Owens & Minor Inc. of Richmond, Va., which gives new cars to five workers who are lucky enough to win its annual perfect attendance contest.
