Council Asked to Cover Cost of Ticket Appeals

Summary

Pittsburgh police have asked taxpayers to cover the court costs of 190 speeding ticket appeals filed after two police officers mistakenly employed a speed detection device that state law prohibits local police from using.

A $4,750 bill to cover the appeals at a cost of $25 each was introduced Tuesday to Pittsburgh City Council. A preliminary vote could happen next week. Police have acknowledged the mistake and promised to reimburse fines.
