Several arts and cultural organizations are offering opportunities for patrons to interact with artists, actors, musicians and even scientists for an informal, intellectually stimulating evening or afternoon. These culture klatches range from pre- or post-performances discussions to independent gatherings of like-minded people to speak French or share thoughts on the latest advances in science. And, of course, there are almost always refreshments.

Join a Culture Klatch to Stimulate Your Intellect

Cafe Scientifique at the Carnegie Science Center could be called an intellectual happy hour.

Attendees can buy drinks and food, mingle, then sit down in the North Side center's funky Works Theater to listen to a guest speaker talk about science-themed topics. The center started the program last year, and sessions often draw nearly 100 people, officials say.

"It's a gathering of people outside of a traditional academic context," says Linda Ortenzo, director of the center's regional SciTech Initiative and organizer of Cafe Scientifique. "We eat, drink and talk science, and that sums it up pretty well. It's happy hour with a side of maybe debate and really good science."
