PHILADELPHIA -- A frigid wind whipped down Market Street, where Calvin Sharpe stood with a knit cap protecting his ears and a three- ring binder in his hands.

Sharpe, 40, of West Philadelphia made about $70,000 his last year as a production manager at S & D Marketing, which introduced Internet phone provider Vonage to Pennsylvania. That was two years ago, before the firm folded. This week he approached passers-by and asked them if they'd like to sign up for Greenpeace memberships.
