Driver Sentenced in Homewood Pedestrian's Death

Summary

An Allegheny County judge sentenced a Pitcairn man on Tuesday to 2 1/2 to 5 years in prison for pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and related charges in the death of a pedestrian.

Alonzo Cotton, 56, was driving through Homewood on Feb. 21, 2010, when his vehicle struck Ernestine Ross, 50, who died of her injuries four months later. Cotton told investigators he knew he struck something after drinking several beers and shots of cognac but didn't stop because he was in a high-crime area, police said. Cotton's attorney, James Sheets, has said it was an accident.
