Summary
'The Crew' outnumbered 'The Zoo.' The short walk from Duquesne University to Consol Energy Center was inviting enough for Duquesne students to turn out in droves Wednesday night for the 79th annual City Game. About 1,250 Duquesne students packed one end zone of Consol Energy Center for the nationally televised game between Duquesne and No. 3 Pitt, and when T.J. McConnell scored twice and Damian Saunders once during the first two minutes. When Saunders buried a 3-pointer for a 9-2 lead, Duquesne's obscure student section known as "The Red and Blue Crew," erupted. "Total astonishment," was freshman Chase Frankhauser's reaction. The Laurel Highlands High School graduate was shirtless and painted as he stood in "The Crew" section along with about 25 of his buddies who occupy a portion of the third floor of Towers Dormitory on the Duquesne campus. Pitt's highly acclaimed student section, "The Oakland Zoo," made the short trip down Fifth Avenue and was outnumbered by an estimated 200. Pitt said some tickets were returned by its students. "This makes me proud to go to Duquesne," Frankhauser said.
Pitt entered its eighth game with a 7-0 record for the eighth time in the past nine seasons. The Panthers own victories over three teams -- Texas (No. 10) Rhode Island (No. 38) and Maryland (136) -- with a Ratings Percentage Index in the upper-third of Division I. A 74-53 decision over Robert Morris at Petersen Events Center also is among Pitt's victims. The Colonials defeated Duquesne, 69-63, at Sewall Center for the Dukes' only prior loss.See the full content of this document
