Summary


PennDOT is investigating the condition of the Fort Pitt Tunnel's ceiling after metal supports rusted through and allowed part of a heavy ceramic panel to break off.

PennDOT chose not to replace the large ceramic panels in 2002- 03, when it spent $90 million to rehabilitate the Fort Pitt Tunnel and Bridge, but the agency wants to ensure other parts of the ceiling are not in danger of falling onto any of the 130,000 vehicles that pass through the portal daily.
