Beginning Wednesday, the 2008 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference will bring in more than 4,000 ceramic artists and educators from around the country, swelling the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, as well as Pittsburgh's streets, through Sunday.

In addition to those who are artists and educators, many more attendees are students, patrons, retailers and manufacturers in the field of ceramic arts. All part of a not-for-profit association that works to promote and improve the field of ceramic arts through programs, exhibitions and publications.

"Pittsburgh's geography and history correspond with the theme of this year's conference -- 'Confluence: Innovation, Community, Environment,' " says Richard Burkett, the council's director of communications and a San Diego State University professor.
