Edgeworth-based glass artist Jeffrey Phelps distinctly remembers his first encounter with glass as an art form. The year was 1976. His mother had seen a pair of contemporary stained-glass windows in an interior-design magazine and thought he might be able to create something similar for her home.

"I was majoring in graphic design at the University of Arizona at the time, and she was convinced I was up for the challenge," recalls Phelps, 55. "I, on the other hand, was not so sure but decided to give it a whirl, and, low and behold, they surprisingly turned out quite nice."

Glass Artists Find Pittsburgh to Be a City of Opportunities

Phelps was hooked as were his family's friends and associates. He ended up with many commissions, both residential and commercial, as a result.

"Hence a glass artist was born," Phelps says with a smile. He is just one of several glass artists in the Pittsburgh area, including Michael Mangiafico and Drew Hine.
