The "Laurels & Lances" (July 1 and TribLIVE.com) item "Was this really necessary?" is out of touch with patriotic citizens. The item criticized the passage of state House Bill 1307, which permits high school students to wear their military uniforms at their graduation ceremonies if they so choose.

The state is not mandating that students wear their military uniforms. The law grants students the right to choose, and in doing so, they are expressing their right to free speech, demonstrating they are responsible citizens and are prepared to face the sacrifices they will confront -- with their lives if need be.
