The atmosphere at Old Hanna's Town in Westmoreland County in the summer of 1782 was one of watchfulness and concern.

Although the Revolutionary War was at end, Indian hostility was at a critical level. Militia, which had been providing a measure of security, were no longer there, having not been paid and clothed.
