America needs to pick its battles, U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey said on Friday.

Despite trillions of dollars of debt, fitful job growth and a potential catastrophic credit default less than a month away, the United States pours more than $10 billion a month into a colossal effort to combat a relatively small force of insurgents hiding in the mountains of Afghanistan. Toomey, who toured that country this year, said the experience made him loath to commit ground troops to other hot spots.
