Warren Mercer Jr. didn't simply teach music to high school band members.

He elevated the North Hills High School Symphony Band to national prominence by winning awards annually and inviting professionals such as Tommy Newsome of "The Tonight Show" and jazz drummer Louie Bellson to perform with the students. Arthur Fiedler, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra for nearly five decades, once directed Mr. Mercer's band.
