City Jazz Icon, Entrepreneur Walt Harper Dies

Summary


Walt Harper, a jazz pianist and former club owner whom colleagues describe as an icon in the Pittsburgh music scene, died Wednesday at his Point Breeze home.

"He was the Pittsburgh George Wein," said Marty Ashby, executive producer of MCG Jazz at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild on the North Side. He was referring to the New York City producer of jazz festivals all over the world.
