Westmoreland County Judge Rita Hathaway likely would have remained a third-grade teacher but for one small boy she had in her class more than 20 years ago.

"There was a little boy who was abused by his father. I was stunned by the bruises and brought him to the principal. I was told to keep my mouth shut. I was told it was a family matter. I was very upset by it," she said. "This was the impetus to do more for kids."
