Lawrenceville's continuing struggle to free itself from the clutches of criminals and junkies intensified Thursday on Almond Way, spreading a little joy in the sliver of an alley near the base of the 40th Street Bridge.

The one-room-wide, garnet-bricked dwelling with the sky blue mailbox announcing "167 1/2" is a drug haven no more. Civic group Lawrenceville United bought it for $6,000 last Friday and city workers boarded it up yesterday, when it was announced Pittsburgh was receiving $175,000 in federal grant money this year to help rid Lawrenceville of blight, crime and gangs.
