Lincoln Not Ready to Fill Pitcher Spot

Summary

One day after Brad Lincoln was ruled out of filling the vacant starting pitcher spot for Tuesday's game against the Cubs, general manager Neal Huntington poured more cold water on Lincoln's chances for a call-up in the near future. On his weekly radio show, Huntington said the right-hander is "still a ways away" from being major-league ready. "Need isn't a reason to promote a prospect," Huntington said. On Saturday, manager John Russell said Lincoln, who pitched Friday night, "did not line up" to start tomorrow for the Pirates.

Neil Walker has started all six games since he was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis, in part because of third baseman Andy LaRoche's balky lower back. "Neil's going to be given every opportunity to earn additional playing time," Huntington said. "If that progresses into an everyday role, he'll earn that, and it's something we'd look at for further down the road."
