Malted milkshakes may seem like a quaint throwback to the days when soda fountains lined Main Street USA, but stirring the powder into milk has long been considered a clever way to bump up the nutrition.

Malted milk powder was patented in 1887 by British pharmacist James Horlick. Horlick worked on a powdered mixture of malted (dried and ground) barley, whole milk, salt and wheat flour, which was marketed first as a nutritional supplement for infants and invalids whose appetites were weak.
