New Music Means More Work to Attract an Audience

Summary

A world premiere can be an exciting event, but new music is also intimidating to many listeners. The Pittsburgh Symphony hopes its new "Points of Entry" programs will help concertgoers to enjoy "The Being of Love" by Reza Vali that will be performed for the first time this weekend at Heinz Hall.

The symphony began its public preparation for the Vali premiere last week by sponsoring an online poetry competition. Creating poems is one of many possible points of entry to "The Being of Love," because it is based on poetry. The composer also will speak about his music before each performance and at a pre-concert talk an hour before the start of each concert. He also is featured on a video on the symphony's Web site, www.pittsburghsymphony.org.
