A Natural Garden Look Requires Planning

Summary

Question: I'm interested in creating a woodland garden on my property. I have some large oak, beech and maple trees with just a few shrubs growing beneath them. I'd like to make a path through the area and then surround it with some flowering plants. How do I get started, and what are some good plant choices?

Answer: I'd start with the path. Because the goal is to create a garden that looks like nature planted it, I would use simple stepping stones of native rock or a path of chopped leaves or shredded bark. When they aren't designed and installed correctly, woodland gardens can look contrived and overdone. You'll need to be careful to set your path and plants in a fashion that mimics a natural setting: make your path meander like a stream with wide curves and gentle angles, and position your plants as if they randomly popped up amid the leaf litter.
