Notebook: Pens' Staal Takes Small Step to Ending Slump

ATLANTA -- Jordan Staal broke out of what has become a full- blown sophomore slump with two goals and an assist Thursday in the Penguins' 4-1 win at Tampa Bay.

Before Thursday, Staal had scored only three goals in the team's first 43 games after finding the net 29 times last season. But even though his numbers last year were exceptional, he's been in the throes of a slide for a long time.
