Summary
With warm weather here to stay, mosquitoes will soon be a part of the outdoors scene. A new product designed for campers and outdoorsmen may offer some help, though. The ThermaCell Mini Lantern is a new, high-tech variation on the old citronella candle. The lantern -- which stands less than 5-inches tall -- uses a butane cartridge to direct heat to a metal grill. A small patch that sits on the grill dispenses Allethrin, a copy of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, into the air over a long period of time, repelling mosquitoes, black flies and other pests. It creates a 15-square-foot "bug free" zone in 10-30 minutes. There's no smell, no open flame and no wax, and the lantern is safe around pets. Suggested retail price is $11.99.
