In response to the McClatchy Newspapers story "Analysts: Speculators clouding cotton market" (Dec. 4 and TribLIVE.com): The buying of contracts for commodities rather than the commodities themselves should be made illegal and severely punished.

These speculators pay a tenth or even less of what the commodity itself costs. They then wait for the price to go up and usually sell the contract to someone who wants the commodity in question.
