Herb Brooks, who coached the Penguins and was the team's director of player development at the time of his death Aug. 11, 2003, will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame today in Toronto. Brooks, who was 66 when he died in an automobile accident in Minnesota, joined the Penguins' staff as a scout in 1996 and was named coach Dec. 9, 1999. He is best known for coaching the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team to the gold medal, the "Miracle on Ice."
"He came to Wilkes-Barre and it was pretty cool, with the history of the Olympic team, to be around him and listen to him talk," said Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi, who was born in Syosset, N.Y. "It might be a little different for American guys because that was obviously a landmark moment. I was glad I got to at least speak to him for a little bit.
