Pennsylvania Quarantines Cattle Over Well-Water Concern

Summary


Cows have been quarantined on a Tioga County farm after state Department of Agriculture staff discovered the animals may have come in contact with wastewater from a natural gas drilling operation.

Uncertainty over the amount of wastewater the 28 cows may have consumed warranted the quarantine, to protect the public from potentially contaminated beef, state officials said. The source of the wastewater was a leaking holding pond near a natural gas well being drilled by East Resources Inc., of Marshall.
