The physician at the center of an investigation of botched radiation treatments for nearly 100 veterans with prostate cancer is a major participant in a $10 million federal study aimed at protecting astronauts from radiation injuries in outer space.

Dr. Gary D. Kao, who is the focus of the investigation at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Philadelphia, is one of the investigators under a grant the National Space Biomedical Research Institute awarded as he was ending his service as a VA contract physician. NASA created and funds the nonprofit institute.
