Summary
John Bowker admitted he was "shocked" July 31 when the San Francisco Giants traded him to the Pirates. "I've been with the Giants my whole career," Bowker said. "They're going in a different direction. I'm looking at this as a new opportunity for me." On Wednesday, Bowker was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis, and will play in right field and at first base. "He gives us another option off the bench and occasional spot starts," manager John Russell said. In 41 games with the Giants this season, Bowker hit .207 with three homers. He batted .319 with four homers for Indy. It's been a pattern for him -- strong numbers in the minors but struggles in the majors. "Consistency is what everyone's striving for, and that's what I haven't done at this level," Bowker said. "I've had weeks when I've done well, but I haven't put together a complete season."
Yesterday was the first day rosters were expanded, but Bowker was the Pirates' lone callup. They plan to bring up a few more prospects -- mostly bullpen depth -- by Tuesday. Pitcher Joe Martinez, who arrived with Bowker in the Javier Lopez trade, is expected to be among the callups.See the full content of this document
