Summary
One of the things that excites Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt about spring practice is that that the graduation of captains Tyler Palko and H.B. Blades is forcing the Panthers to look for new leaders. Wannstedt, however, isn't necessary looking for them to be vocal. "The most interesting thing is the whole leadership thing on our team. It pretty much changes every year, but it's a little bit more subdued and businesslike than maybe it's been the last three years," Wannstedt said. "I think that's because there are so many players trying to establish themselves. You don't want somebody being a leader just by talking about it. What comes first, the action or the talk? We'd much rather have guys lead by example."
* Freshman Aaron Smith, a Gateway High School graduate who enrolled in January after injuring his shoulder in training camp, might be the first player to make a position switch this spring. Smith moved from receiver to cornerback in the middle of Sunday's practice after redshirt freshman Ricky Gary was sidelined, and Wannstedt believes Smith could add some competition at the position. "We may take a look at him because of our depth," Wannstedt said. "We were short at the corner position, so we put Aaron over there and we're going to look at that."See the full content of this document
