In 1970, four years after getting his doctorate in engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, John A. Swanson started a company that became ANSYS Inc. in Canonsburg.

The company markets a software code that can be used in aerospace, automotive and other industries to simulate how a product design will work in real-world environments. The firm expects $360 million in revenue this year, employs 1,400 people and distributes products in more than 40 sales offices worldwide.
