"It's kind of like being pope. The only way you can get out of it is to die," says Ryner, 49, after climbing down from a John Deere combine. The big green harvester stands in sharp contrast to the dark bronze soybean field. The cloudless day is ideal for getting in the beans, Ryner says, but sure, he'll take five minutes to talk politics.
