Port Authority Seeks to Shorten Travel Times On Crowded Streets

When the first of Pittsburgh's busways were built 33 years ago, they were the cutting edge of bus transit, slashing travel times to Downtown by taking buses out of regular traffic.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County is trying to extend the busways' benefits to city streets with its proposed "Rapid Bus" service, following the lead of cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Las Vegas and Cleveland, said Dennis Hinebaugh, director of the National Bus Rapid Transit Institute at the University of South Florida.
