The U.S. Postal Service's iconic blue collection boxes are becoming as rare as handwritten letters.

Electronic communication, online bill paying and other Internet use, including people visiting the postal service's Web site at www.usps.com, have contributed to the declining use of the once- ubiquitous mail boxes, said Tad Kelley, a postal service spokesman for the Pittsburgh district.
