A Mon Valley man has been sentenced to life in prison for the shooting deaths of a retired police chief and his wife during a robbery in their home.

Gerald Louis Szakal Jr., 27, of Webster was sentenced Wednesday. A Washington County jury convicted him on Oct. 1 of second-degree murder in the deaths of Howard Springer, 63, a former Carroll Township police chief, and his wife, Nancy, 65, in March 2008.
