Summary


I'm a Pittsburgher who just moved back from the San Francisco Bay Area, where buses have bikes racks like those recently installed here by the Port Authority. Since Bay Area buses have had racks for years, I wanted to address the concerns expressed by Greg Massung in his letter "Baffling idea" (Sept. 29 and TribLIVE.com) with a long- range perspective.

1. Racks don't block the bus driver's view. Bikes sit just under the windshield, low enough to be out of the way, but high enough for the driver to see, so he can supervise correct loading and be reminded that the rack is open and adding extra length in front.
