Rendell Gambles On Tuition Plan

Summary


Gov. Ed Rendell brought his campaign to lower tuition costs at state-owned universities and community colleges to California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday by promising to prevent burdensome debt for thousands of students.

The governor is pressing the General Assembly to pass a measure before adjournment this summer that would use revenue from video poker machines for tuition abatement. Some students could receive as much as $7,600 a year toward the cost of tuition.
