A federal judge on Friday granted leniency to a former University of Pittsburgh researcher who claims his 2008 attempt to buy sex with a 10-year-old girl was the result of a brain injury he suffered during a mugging three years before.

Roger Wesley Farris, 41, of Fox Chapel received a sentence of three years and eight months in prison. He pleaded guilty in July to agreeing to pay a federal agent posing as an out-of-work West Virginia steelworker $700 plus $50 for gasoline to bring his 10- year-old "niece" from Weirton to a motel in Oakland so Farris could have sex with her.
