'Resurrection' Will Conclude Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's Season

Summary

The immense vision of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 -- nothing less than life, death and resurrection -- makes it a natural choice for important occasions. Previous Pittsburgh Symphony performances of it include ones led by William Steinberg at the opening of Heinz Hall in 1971, by Lorin Maazel at his final concerts as music director in 1996, and by Gilbert Levine at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II in 2004.

Manfred Honeck will close his first season as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra by leading it, two vocal soloists and the Mendelssohn Choir in Mahler's Second Symphony on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon at Heinz Hall, Downtown. The soloists are Elizabeth DeShong, mezzo-soprano, and Simona Saturova, soprano.
