Summary
Pennsylvania officials want the federal Department of Energy to rethink its designation of three-fourths of the state and some mid- Atlantic neighbors as areas critical to the nation's electricity grid. The Department of Environmental Protection, at Gov. Ed Rendell's request, and the Public Utility Commission on Friday asked the DOE for a rehearing on the decision they fear could weaken the state's powers to control controversial and perhaps unnecessary high- voltage transmission line projects. The PUC sued federal energy officials in U.S. District Court yesterday in a second move to challenge last month's National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor designation. Some officials who object to the so-called NIETC also are critics of Greensburg-based Allegheny Energy Inc.'s plan for a $1.3 billion transmission line. Allegheny Energy spokesman David Neurohr said NIETC isn't project-specific. "That is just third party affirmation that this area is in critical need of infrastructure investment," he said.
