Summary


I am following with great interest the courageous prosecution appeal of the lenient sentence -- a mere 55 months in prison -- granted to felon, grand thief and former state Senate powerhouse Vincent Fumo, D-Philadelphia, by Senior U.S. District Judge Ronald Buckwalter ("Federal judges dubious of Fumo's prison term," May 26 and TribLIVE.com). Judge Buckwalter went out of his way to bow to Fumo, going so far as to laud him for his "good works" as he sentenced him for a series of vast, criminal-enrichment schemes that netted him millions of dollars of public money.

Fumo had many powerful friends at the time he was originally sentenced. Then-Gov. Edward Rendell, former state Supreme Court Justice Richard Zappala and state Sen. Christine Tartaglione, D- Philadelphia, shamefully soiled their offices and reputations by arguing on Fumo's behalf that he not be sentenced harshly. Their involvement paid off, as Buckwalter threw justice in the trash bin, bowing to the politicos.
