The February issue of Consumer Reports magazine says that almost 100,000 people die each year in the U.S. from hospital-acquired infections, most of which are said to be preventable.

WebMD.com reported on May 9, 2006 that research from the University of California at San Francisco, the alma mater of anti- tobacco Surgeon General Richard Carmona, says that if secondhand smoke were eliminated, only 2,200 heart-related deaths would be prevented in the first year, increasing to 6,400 per year in 25 years.
