Summary
With the start of the regular season less than a week away, the Steelers erred on the side of caution Thursday night. The team held running back Willie Parker (hamstring) and wide receiver Santonio Holmes (back) out of its final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers because of injuries. Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons (ankle) also didn't suit up, and outside linebacker James Harrison didn't play because of a coach's decision. Keyaron Fox and Andre Frazier started for Timmons and Harrison, respectively. Second-year players Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed started for Parker and Holmes, respectively. Quarterback Dennis Dixon (shoulder) and fullback Carey Davis (ankle) also didn't play.
Defensive tackle Scott Paxson left the game in the first quarter with a concussion and did not return. Running back Justin Vincent also left in the first quarter with a stinger, but he returned in the second quarter.See the full content of this document
