Summary


Great movies usually take great chances, risking everything on a roll of the dice, or several.

"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" takes one such chance, showing most of the story of Elle editor and bon vivant extraordinaire Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), debilitated by a massive stroke, in the first person. Suddenly, this lover of words, women, freedom and beauty cannot move, speak or do anything but wink his left eyelid to communicate to the outside world. He feels he's been trapped inside a diving "bell" (suit), plummeting swiftly to the bottom where nobody can hear his screams.
