It's particularly galling that Pennsylvania's highest court uses taxpayer dollars to maintain its imperial judiciary while the state's "balanced" budget leaves a looming structural deficit of up to $5 billion unaddressed.

Only two states, California and Illinois, pay their justices more than Pennsylvania pays its Supreme Court justices, a Trib analysis of National Center for State Courts survey data found. Add staff and office-space costs, and taxpayers' annual bill -- more than $1 million for each Pennsylvania justice -- is an outrage.
