Summary
Operation Santa Claus is getting ready to put dinner on the table. But it takes plenty of helping hands to serve up a holiday meal for thousands of needy families in Western Pennsylvania.
The Tribune-Review's 2009 campaign will provide a festive and nutritious meal for 8,677 households, with assistance from the Salvation Army and Shop 'n Save.See the full content of this document

Trib's Annual Operation Santa Claus Drive Sets $141,000 Goal
Each grocery bag will hold a gift certificate for a meat item of the family's choice, plus scalloped potatoes, stuffing, canned vegetables and fruit, fruit-flavored gelatin, applesauce, cornbread muffins, snack crackers, holiday cookies and hot cocoa.
Each bag will contain coloring books and crayons for children. Each participating Salvation Army service unit or Corps will receive boxes filled with donated new and gently used children's books for distribution to families.Assistance comes from the Salvation Army, which screens the recipients and delivers the groceries, and from Shop 'n Save, which orders and delivers the groceries and the crayons to our packing site.Approximately 300 dedicated volunteers pack the grocery bags and load the trucks. But the most important help comes from Tribune-Review readers: individuals, families and corporate donors who fund the project with gifts large and small. Some donors prefer to remain anonymous. Others write a brief message to accompany a mention of their gift. Lists of donors will be published throughout the holiday season, along with donation coupons. Sixteen dollars will pay for a family of four to enjoy Christmas dinner.Operation Santa Claus has set a fundraising goal this year of $141,000. Every dollar will be used to help our neighbors in need. We're putting dinner on the table.
