Licorice always has had a standard look of long sticks or strings, but the taste is really what matters. That is where Young & Smylie soft licorice pieces prove looks don't really matter. The small cylinders from the Hershey Co. are powerful and satisfying in their tastes, particularly the classic black offering. It shouts "licorice" with a capital L. The strawberry and peach mango varieties are good, too, even if the latter is stepping into a new flavor experience. At a family test, for instance, my wife, Katherine, looked with trepidation at the peach mango, but then admitted it "wasn't bad." Nephew Mike, however, dove into that pouch fearlessly and gave it a big thumbs up. The resealable bags work rather well, too, which is a plus. A sane treat fan can go only so far in a lico-palooza.
